Hyderabad: The capital city of Telangana was thrown into turmoil on Tuesday morning (August 5) after a water tanker dramatically plunged into a drain when a section of the road collapsed in the upscale Banjara Hills neighbourhood. The incident, which followed a night of relentless rainfall, left commuters stranded and once again underscored the fragile state of the city’s ageing infrastructure.
The collapse occurred near Road No. 1, close to Virinchi Hospital, where an old stormwater drain originating from Banjara Lake (Anthagani Kunta) runs beneath the road. Witnesses described how the concrete covering gave way without warning, creating a massive crater that swallowed the 10,000-litre tanker as it passed.

Driver escapes with minor injuries
Emergency crews rushed to the scene, treating the driver for minor injuries. Traffic police confirmed that the affected road, constructed over the drain more than three decades ago, had likely weakened over time. Officials suggested that the combination of structural decay and heavy rainfall triggered the sudden cave-in.
The stranded tanker remained stuck for hours, causing significant traffic snarls in the busy locality. While engineers from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) later began working to retrieve the vehicle, frustrated motorists faced prolonged delays during peak hours.
The mishap has reignited concerns about Hyderabad’s resilience during the monsoon. In recent weeks, similar collapses have been reported, including in Goshamahal, where parts of another 30-year-old drain have reportedly caved in.
Weather in Hyderabad and neighbouring districts
Meanwhile, on the weather front, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for Telangana until Saturday, authorities are warning residents to brace for further disruption. The forecast includes heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 30–40 km/h. Citizens have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel during intense downpours, with officials warning of possible flooding in low-lying areas and severe traffic congestion.
