New Delhi: It was a moment to savour for every Indian fan as legends Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami lifted the elusive Women’s ODI World Cup trophy after Harmanpreet Kaur & Co. beat South Africa in the final to clinch their maiden title. India hammered the Proteas by 52 runs in the final at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai to bring an end to their 47-year-long wait for their first-ever Women’s World Cup crown.
The legendary duo of Mithali and Jhulan, who were once the strongest pillars of Indian women’s cricket, joined in the celebrations and lifted the trophy with the World Cup-winning side. It was a watershed moment for every Indian fan who witnessed Mithali and Jhulan carry the Indian women’s cricket team on their shoulders during their playing days.
Jhulan, who is the leading wicket-taker for India in women’s ODIs and is regarded as one of the best fast bowlers of all time in the women’s game, had tears in her eyes as she shared a long hug with Harmanpreet after lifting the trophy. Mithali was surrounded by the Indian players, some of whom she nurtured during her long stint as India captain, as she finally got a chance to lift the trophy.
Former India captain Anjum Chopra, who is also a notable commentator now, also joined the celebrations with the rest of the Indian women’s team after their victory in the final. Mithali, Jhulan and Anjum were on broadcast duties for the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup final between India and South Africa, and were invited by skipper Harmanpreet to be a part of the celebrations.
