New Delhi: A massive avalanche hit Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday night, destroying homes and people’s lives. The avalanche wrecked havoc in the Sarbal area of Sonamarg in Ganderbal district, demolishing houses and vehicles on its way. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries have been reported so far.

Avalanche in Jammu and Kashmir

On Tuesday, avalanche struck the popular tourist area of Sonamarg at 10:12 pm, as snow raced down the mountain sloped toward nearby homes and hotels. It can be seen in CCTV footage the moment the snowstorm covered the buildings in the region.

According to officials, no loss of life has been reported despite the avalanche being massive in nature. On Monday, a warning for a high-intensity avalanche was issued after continuous snowfall across the Valley.

Jammu-Srinagar national highway closed

Due to fresh snowfall across Kashmir on Tuesday, the Jammu-Srinagar national highway was closed. All flights at Srinagar airport were cancelled much to the distress of hundreds of tourists. On later Monday night, the snowfall began and soon covered the entire region. As snow piled up near the Navyug tunnel at Qazigund and Banihal, National Highway 44 had to be closed.

At Srinagar International Airport, the snowfall led to the cancellation of all 58 scheduled flights. According to the authorities, snowfall throughout the day made the runway unsafe to use.
