Hyderabad: Telangana’s capital city of Hyderabad was left reeling on Thursday evening after a sudden and intense spell of rain brought large parts of the city to a halt. The heavy downpour flooded roads, paralysed traffic, and led to widespread power outages, particularly during the peak evening commute.
The city’s western tech corridor, including Gachibowli, was among the worst hit, receiving an extraordinary 123.5 mm of rainfall. Adjacent neighbourhoods such as Khajaguda, Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Ameerpet, Manikonda, and Khairatabad also faced severe disruption. Commuters were forced to navigate waist-deep water in some places, with many two-wheeler riders struggling against strong currents and waterlogged streets.

Traffic disrupted across multiple locations
Major thoroughfares in Srinagar Colony and Shaikpet resembled flowing streams, bringing traffic to a near standstill. Several vehicles were left stranded, while long traffic jams added to the chaos. Traffic police from both Hyderabad and Cyberabad remained deployed late into the night, issuing alerts and managing diversions. Meanwhile, emergency response teams from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation worked to clear uprooted trees, broken signboards, and exposed electrical lines.

As a safety measure, officials opened a sluice gate of the Himayath Sagar reservoir to ease the rising water levels, releasing excess rainwater into the Musi River after continuous upstream showers.
