WATCH: Extremely heavy rain sweeps Delhi-NCR; flooded roads cause traffic disruptions | IMD forecast

New Delhi: A fresh spell of heavy rain lashed Delhi and its adjoining cities including Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and Faridabad on Wednesday morning, bringing welcome respite from the sweltering heat but also throwing daily life into disarray across the region. The day began under gloomy skies, with thunderstorms, gusty winds, and continuous downpours sweeping through the National Capital Region.

Though the showers broke the prolonged heat spell, waterlogging made a swift return to many parts of south and southwest Delhi, as familiar scenes of submerged roads and crawling traffic played out during the morning rush hour. Several low-lying neighbourhoods were partially inundated, leaving commuters stranded in knee-deep water.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, to continue throughout the day. While no formal weather alert has been issued for the capital, conditions are expected to remain humid, with the mercury hovering near 31 degrees Celsius and minimum temperatures around 27 degrees Celsius.

Noida and Ghaziabad experienced intense bursts of rainfall, accompanied by strong winds and thunder that swept through several localities. IMD officials have warned that similar wet weather is likely to persist over the coming days, with little reprieve in sight for those hoping for dry conditions.

More rains expected on Thursday

The forecast for Thursday, 24 July, suggests a continuation of light to moderate showers across Delhi-NCR, with overcast skies and the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms. Daytime temperatures are expected to remain between 32 degrees Celsius and 34 degrees Celsius, while nighttime lows may dip to 23 degrees Celsius–25 degrees Celsius.

Gurugram struggles with drainage concerns

In Gurugram, Tuesday’s downpour gave way to scattered showers and light thunderstorms on Wednesday. While the maximum temperature held steady at around 31 degrees Celsius, the oppressive humidity pushed the real-feel temperature to nearly 39 degrees Celsius, making outdoor conditions uncomfortable.

Though no major disruptions were reported, waterlogging remained a persistent issue in several areas. Civic authorities urged commuters to exercise caution, especially in flood-prone spots like Sector 14, Sector 29, Rajiv Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, IFFCO Chowk, and Golf Course Road.
