WATCH | Bihar shocker: 5 men shoot patient dead in Patna ICU; ADGP blames killings on ‘seasonal lull’

Patna: In a shocking breach of hospital security, a patient was shot dead inside Paras Hospital in Patna on Wednesday morning. News9 has exclusively accessed the disturbing CCTV footage that shows five armed men walking into the hospital ward, bypassing security and murdering the patient in cold blood. The victim was undergoing treatment when the attackers carried out the targeted killing.

Victim was a parolee facing several murder charges

The victim, Chandan Mishra, was a known criminal with multiple murder cases registered against him. He had been shifted from Buxar to Bhagalpur jail and was out on parole for medical treatment. Admitted to Paras Hospital, Mishra was targeted in what police believe was a gang rivalry. He later succumbed to his injuries.

Senior Superintendent of Police Kartikeya Sharma confirmed Mishra was attacked by members of a rival gang. Authorities are investigating the possibility of inside involvement, including lapses by hospital security personnel.

Law and order under scrutiny in poll-bound Bihar

The incident has triggered outrage across Bihar and intensified scrutiny of the state’s deteriorating law and order. In recent weeks, several high-profile murders have rocked the state capital, including those of businessman Gopal Khemka, BJP leader Surendra Kewat and lawyer Jitendra Mahato. With the state heading towards Assembly elections in a few months, the Opposition parties are quick on uptake in pinning the spate of killings and the rising crime graph as a key electoral issue. The Opposition leaders have come down heavily on the Nitish Kumar-led government for its failure to ensure public safety.

While former Deputy CM and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav questioned the Bihar government if “anyone was safe anywhere” in the state, RJD spokesperson Mritunjay Tiwari alleged that there is ‘Gunda Raj’ in Bihar. “The criminals don’t fear the police anymore. Crime is out of control in Bihar. The state government is silent. No one is safe in Bihar. The law and order situation in Bihar has collapsed,” he said. Congress MP Akhilesh Prasad Singh echoed the RJD spokesperson. “The incidents of murder during the NDA rule have increased. Crime against women and children have increased,” he alleged.

RJD MP Manoj Kumar Jha had sharp words for CM Nitish Kumar. Speaking to reporters, Jha questioned the complete breakdown of law and order in the state, saying, “Bihar should be a matter of concern for the entire country. Crimes happen every day. Is this the rule of law?” He demanded that the Prime Minister send a fact-finding team to Bihar immediately.

ADG blames the killings on ‘seasonal lull’

While the government and Opposition are exchanging scathing words, Bihar’s Additional Director General of Police Kundan Krishnan has the most bizarrely worded explanation. Krishnan linked the rise in murders to the pre-monsoon period, saying farmers have less work during this time, contributing to a spike in violence. He added that political tensions ahead of elections are also fuelling the focus on crime.
