Wasim Jaffer Rates Ajit Agarkar’s Tenure As Chief Selector, Gives 7 Out Of 10

Ajit Agarkar’s stint as India’s chief selector ended on October 4 and the BCCI has already advertised for the vacant post. The new selector will only be appointed chief of the committee if he has played more Tests than Pragyan Ojha.

Under the BCCI rules, a selector with the most Test caps is appointed the chief. Ojha played 24 Tests. Shiv Sundar Das, RP Singh and Ajay Ratra are the other members of the selection committee. Following the end of Agarkar’s stint, Wasim Jaffer has shared his take on him and rated his stint.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Jaffer gave him 7 out of 10 marks. While Jaffer highlighted India’s success in white-ball cricket, he also questioned Agarkar on some of the tough calls his panel made.

“We have done very well in white-ball cricket. We won two World Cups, the Asia Cup, and the Champions Trophy. So we have won trophies. I would give him 7 marks out of 10. I think how he handled some people could have been better. Surya was dropped after winning the T20 World Cup. Why was Bhuvi not playing T20Is? Where is Shami? Then, whatever was happening with Sarfaraz, Auqib Nabi was not picked earlier; Abhimanyu Easwaran’s case has also been like this,” Jaffer said on his YouTube channel.

“Then, the way he handled Virat and Rohit, and made Iyer the captain straightaway after the IPL. Rohit was removed from captaincy after winning the Champions Trophy. These are the things I feel could have been better. But he’s known to be blunt and is not scared to take hard decisions,” he added.

As Jaffer mentioned, Rohit was removed from captaincy despite him leading India to a title win in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Suryakumar Yadav was sacked as captain and dropped from the team after the 2026 T20 World Cup. The former India captain had his eyes set on the 2028 LA Olympics gold medal.

Who will replace Ajit Agarkar?

Recently, there were rumours that Parthiv Patel could replace  , but there is no official word on him. Patel played 25 Tests, one more than Ojha. Naman Ojha is interested in becoming the selector but it isn’t confirmed whether he has applied for the post.
