Vivo has officially confirmed that its next-gen foldable, the Vivo X Fold 5, will be launched in China on 25 June at 7 PM local time. Vivo says the handset will be lighter and stronger than its predecessor, the X Fold 3, with leaked specifications suggesting a thickness of just 4.3mm when unfolded and a weight of around 209 grams.
But that’s not the big thing- Vivo has also teased that the upcoming flagship foldable will feature compatibility with a range of Apple devices and services, including the Apple Watch and iCloud.
In an announcement made via Weibo, Vivo Product Manager Han Boxiao revealed that the Vivo X Fold 5 will not only be slimmer and lighter than its predecessor, but it will also come with a suite of features that allow it to work seamlessly with Apple’s ecosystem. This includes the ability to sync with the Apple Watch, access iCloud files natively, control MacBooks remotely, and even pair with AirPods.
The compatibility with Apple devices comes as a major surprise, as Apple has so far kept its ecosystem tightly walled, with devices like the Apple Watch working exclusively with iPhones. However, Vivo appears to be the first Android phone brand to bridge that wall. According to Boxiao, the Vivo X Fold 5 will allow Apple Watch users to receive call and message notifications, and sync their health data directly into Vivo’s health app.
Additionally, Boxiao has claimed that the Vivo X Fold 5 will be able to connect directly to iCloud. According to Vivo, the upcoming foldable will feature built-in iCloud integration directly within its file manager, enabling users to access their Apple cloud storage just as they would on a Mac or iPhone. There’s also talk of the X Fold 5 acting as an extended display for Mac computers, hinting at potential productivity use cases typically limited to Apple’s Continuity features.
Vivo X Fold 5 specifications
Vivo has confirmed that the foldable will be officially unveiled in China on June 25, alongside a new pair of wireless earbuds. Earlier, the company also confirmed that the upcoming The X Fold 5 will feature 8T LTPO panels on both the main and cover displays and peak local brightness of 4,500 nits. Both screens are said to support high-frequency PWM dimming and are TUV Rheinland certified for eye protection. The phone will also carry Zeiss Master Colour certification for improved colour accuracy.
On the camera front, Vivo is rumoured to equip the X Fold 5 with a triple 50-megapixel rear camera setup, including a periscope telephoto lens. For selfies, the device is rumoured to feature two 32-megapixel selfie cameras – one on the inner display and another on the cover screen. Under the hood the The Vivo X Fold 5 is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor along with a 6,000mAh battery with 90W wired and 30W wireless charging support.
