Vivah Panchami is a very auspicious and sacred festival celebrated on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Margashirsha month. This year Vivah Panchami falls on 25th November i.e. Tuesday. The importance of this date increases because on this day in Tretayuga, the marriage of Lord Shri Ram with Mother Sita took place in Mithila.
Ramsita’s marriage is considered to be the highest example of dignity, religion, ideals and dedication, hence this date is celebrated with special worship, recitation and festivals to commemorate their divine union.
Mythological incident of Shri Ramsita marriage
It is believed that during the Swayamvar of Mother Sita, Shri Ram effortlessly picked up the bow of Lord Shiva and strung it, due to which the bow broke. After this, joy spread in Janakpuri and Mother Sita dedicated her life completely by putting a garland around the neck of Lord Shri Ram. King Janak sent the information of Swayamvar to Ayodhya, after which the grand procession of Maharaj Dasharatha reached Mithila. The divine marriage of Ramsita took place amidst Veda mantras, Yagya rituals and Vedic traditions. To remember this occasion, Vivah Panchami is celebrated every year on Margashirsha Shukla Panchami.
Why celebrate Vivah Panchami?
There is a religious belief that worshiping Lord Ram and Mother Sita on this day removes obstacles in marriage and increases good fortune. At many places, recitation of the marriage incident of Ramcharitmanas, Janaki Mangala, Mangalgeet and tableaus of Ramsita marriage are organised. In Mithila and Ayodhya this day is still celebrated as a big festival.
How did the name Vivah Panchami come about?
The name of this date is made up of two words. First, Vivah, which is the sacred marriage of Shri Ramsita. Secondly, it is Panchami, this marriage took place on this day because this divine marriage took place on Margashirsha Shukla Panchami, hence this date got the name Vivah Panchami. In Ramayana, Puranas and folklore, this Panchami has been described as the original day of marital union of Lord Ram and Mother Sita. For this reason this date is considered very auspicious religiously.
