Former Team India batter Wasim Jaffer has showered praise on Shubman Gill for his impressive performances with the bat and his leadership in the ongoing Test series against England.

Jaffer also said that Gill has taken on the crucial No. 4 role with great responsibility, filling the void left by Virat Kohli.

Shubman Gill made a strong start to his captaincy tenure in the Test series against England. He scored a century (147) in the first innings at Headingley, followed by two more centuries (269 and 161) in the second Test at Edgbaston. Team India secured a 336-run victory, leveling the five-match series 1-1.

In a conversation with RevSportz, Wasim Jaffer said that Shubman Gill stepped into the role once held by Virat Kohli. He described Gill’s batting in the first two Tests as exceptional. Jaffer also expressed confidence that Gill will evolve into a strong leader with more captaincy experience.

Virat Kohli retired from Tests abruptly right before the IND vs ENG series. It did not go down well with the fans as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma had reiterated their willingness to play Test Cricket even further.

“No. 4, the way he has taken the responsibility, and the way he has filled the void of Virat Kohli, it’s not small shoes to fill. The way he batted in the first two Test matches was outstanding. And I feel, as he captains more and more, I think he will become a good leader,” Jaffer said.

Wasim Jaffer said that leadership has brought the best out of Gill. He added that the young skipper has already proved his ability to handle pressure. Jaffer expressed optimism about India’s future under Gill’s captaincy.

“The pressure that we talk about, whether the pressure of the captaincy will affect his performance, we have got the answer. Captaincy is bringing the best out of Gill. Tactically, he will improve. He is this up-and-coming captain,” Jaffer continued.

“He is a very intelligent guy, somebody who leads from the front. So, he is not going to shy away from responsibility. I see good things happening under his captaincy,” he concluded.

Earlier, England had posted 387 in their first innings, with Joe Root scoring a century. Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse added half-centuries. For India, Jasprit Bumrah was the standout performer with a five-wicket haul, while Mohammed Siraj and Reddy picked up two wickets each.
