‘Virat Kohli Was About To Get Sacked As Captain…’: Former RCB Star Drops Huge Revelation

Virat Kohli is one of the best cricket players to ever play the game. In addition to his enormous contributions to Team India in international cricket, Kohli has also helped Royal Challengers Bengaluru reach new heights in the IPL. Having been a member of the team since the inaugural season of 2008, Kohli helped them win a lot of games and even served as captain from 2013 to 2021.

The franchise finally won their first-ever IPL title with Rajat Patidar as captain as they defeated Punjab Kings in the final match. In 2016, RCB did reach the finals but lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad while Kohli was captain.

Despite his impressive batting performance, the RCBs title drought drew a lot of criticism. Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali, who was formerly a member of the RCB, revealed that the franchise wanted to promote wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel as captain in the 2019 edition of the IPL sacking Virat Kohli.

“Yes, I think he was. I’m quite sure he was. In the final year when Gary Kirsten was there-after the first year, I believe-Parthiv was in line to become captain. He had a brilliant cricketing brain,” Moeen said on Sports Tak.

“That was the talk at the time. I don’t know what happened or why it didn’t materialise, but I’m sure he was seriously considered for the role,” he added.

However, Kohli did retained his position in 2019 and stayed in the role. Notably, Kohli stepped as the captain IPL 2021 to manage his workload.

Parthiv Patel, the former wicketkeeper-batter has been veteran of 139 matches in the IPL amassing around 2,848 runs. Parthiv was also part of Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians’ IPL winning sides. In IPL 2025, he joined Gujarat Titans as the mentor.
