Virat Kohli needs to learn from Shreyas Iyer, play India A games to find form: Kaif

Former India cricketer Mohammed Kaif believes Virat Kohli needs to find ways to get more game time to regain his rhythm and form. Kohli, who recently returned to international cricket after a seven-month hiatus, has struggled in the ongoing ODI series against Australia, being dismissed for consecutive ducks – a first in his ODI career.

The senior batter, who has long been a mainstay in the format, is now looking to rediscover the fluency that has defined his prolific career.

Reflecting on ,Kaif suggested that the 36-year-old could take inspiration from Shreyas Iyer, who has maintained consistency by staying active in . Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif highlighted how game time and mental readiness play a crucial role in maintaining form, particularly after long breaks from international cricket.

“I had met Shreyas Iyer recently, and I asked him about his stance and rhythm,” Kaif said. “Since he is currently only playing ODIs after taking a break from red-ball cricket and not participating in T20Is, I wanted to understand how he still manages to play with such fluency. He is mentally sorted, knows his game inside out, and has fine-tuned his mind. He also played in the India A matches, and that’s why I say Virat and Rohit should consider doing the same.”

Kaif further added, “Iyer’s fluency comes from staying active. He never looks out of touch, unlike Virat at the moment. Virat currently looks unsettled, whereas Iyer has been playing regularly, and it shows in his game.”

The consecutive ducks have raised questions about Kohli’s current form, especially with the 2027 ODI World Cup on the horizon. To make a strong case for himself, the former captain will need to perform in every limited international fixture available.

Having suffered defeats in both ODIs against Australia, Kohli now aims for redemption in the series’ final game, scheduled to be played in Sydney on October 25. The third ODI presents him with an opportunity to regain confidence, showcase his class, and remind fans why he remains one of India’s premier batters. With a focus on game time and mental preparation, Kohli could turn the tide in his comeback and set the stage for a strong run ahead.
