Alimony Row: In a viral video, husband refuses to pay ₹15,000 alimony to wife in court. He cited his wife’s extramarital affair, responsibility for his income, loan and two children. This incident has sparked a new debate on alimony laws.

Extra Marital Affair Claim: The dispute regarding maintenance to be paid by the husband to the wife in divorce cases is not a new thing in India. But recently a courtroom video that went viral on social media platform X has sparked a new debate on this issue. In the video, a husband is seen telling the judge that he cannot pay alimony of Rs 15,000 every month to his ex-wife. The husband raised a question in the court that why should he pay alimony to the wife who has herself admitted to having an extra-marital affair?

The husband told the court that he has two children, who are minors and currently live in his care. The entire responsibility of their education and other expenses rests on him. He told that his monthly salary is Rs 60,000, out of which Rs 20,000 goes towards the installment of home loan taken in 2020. With the remaining Rs 40,000, he has to support his children and himself.

The couple was married in 2015 and separated in 2021. The husband revealed in the court that when his wife left him, he had filed a police complaint. During that complaint, the wife herself admitted that he was having an affair with someone else. When the judge asked what was the problem in giving the wife the demanded amount of Rs 15,000 (Rs 10,000 for living expenses and Rs 5,000 for house rent), the husband gave complete details of his salary and loan liabilities. His question was that why should a wife who works and earns her own money give money to someone who has also admitted to having an affair?

After the video of this incident surfaced, people are giving their opinions fiercely on social media. Many people even called it ‘legal terrorism’. Some people are raising the question, ‘Is alimony a reward for cheating?’ People also say that giving legal protection for wrongdoings gives a wrong message to the society. Along with this, the demand to make the existing laws gender neutral i.e. equal for all irrespective of gender is also gaining momentum. However, it is not clear from the video as to where this incident actually took place.
