Vinícius Júnior Commends Lamine Yamal for Condemning Anti-Muslim Chants

MADRID (AP) – Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior praised Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal for his public condemnation of anti-Muslim chants during a recent match.

He emphasized the importance of unity among players in combating discrimination.

Vinícius made his remarks on Monday, shortly after Yamal criticized the chants directed at players during Spain’s friendly match against Egypt last Tuesday. Yamal, a practicing Muslim, labeled the chants as intolerable and disrespectful.

Vinícius’s Experiences with Racism

Vinícius, who represents Brazil on the international stage, has frequently faced racist taunts throughout his career in Europe. He has been an outspoken advocate against racism, stating, “it’s always complicated” to address these issues, but noted that “these things happen a lot.”

He expressed hope that the ongoing fight against discrimination would persist, stating, “Hopefully we can continue with this fight.” He added that Yamal’s voice on this matter could inspire others, highlighting that while famous athletes have resources to address these issues, many marginalized individuals suffer more significantly.

Incidents of Racism in Football

In a recent Champions League match in Lisbon, Vinícius accused Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni of racially insulting him during a celebration. This incident occurred as Benfica fans targeted him with derogatory remarks from the stands.

Vinícius clarified that he does not label entire countries as racist but acknowledged the presence of racists within them, saying, “I’m not saying that Spain or Germany or Portugal are racist countries, but there are racists in these countries, and in Brazil and other countries as well.” He urged collective action to ensure that future generations do not face similar discrimination.

Upcoming Champions League Match

Vinícius spoke to the media on the eve of Real Madrid’s quarterfinal match against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, reiterating the need for solidarity among players in the fight against racism and discrimination in sports.
