VinFast Plans India entry with India-specific E-scooters in 2026

New Delhi: Vietnam-based electric vehicle company VinFast is planning to enter India’s two-wheeler market in the second half of 2026. The company will introduce electric scooters that are being developed specifically for Indian conditions, instead of bringing existing global models.

Speaking to Autocar Professional, VinFast Asia CEO Pham Sanh Chau shared details about the company’s plans. He said that VinFast will set up a dedicated manufacturing line for electric two-wheelers at its facility in Tamil Nadu. The company is currently expanding infrastructure at this plant to support scooter production as a separate operation from its four-wheeler business.

These scooters are tailored for Indian conditions

According to VinFast, the upcoming scooters are being designed only for India. These will not be adapted versions of scooters sold in other countries. The company has been studying the Indian market for more than a year and claims that this research has helped shape the products. Factors such as daily riding habits, road conditions, charging availability, average travel distances and price sensitivity have been considered during development.

VinFast is also checking whether it qualifies for government incentive schemes such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) programme and PM E-DRIVE. The company said this would depend on the size of its investment and the pace at which the two-wheeler project moves forward.

VinFast’s plan for making their scooter affordable

To keep costs under control, VinFast has already begun discussions with Indian suppliers. The company plans to source parts locally, including battery components. Localisation is expected to lower production costs and make scooters more competitive in a price-sensitive market like India.

While VinFast’s four-wheeler plant is being prepared for an annual capacity of 150,000 units, the company’s two-wheeler plans are much larger in the long run. The manufacturer has a long-term target of producing up to one million electric scooters. However, VinFast has not shared any details about how long it will take to reach this level or how much money will be invested for this expansion.
