Vidya Balan Got 7 Offers to Play M.S. Subbulakshmi, But Set One Condition

Vidya Balan, who was recently seen as Kantha in Jailer 2, impressed audiences with her negative role. She is also confirmed to be playing the main villain in Jailer 3. Meanwhile, the actress has spoken about the offers she received to play M.S. Subbulakshmi in a biopic.

Back in 2024, Vidya did a tribute photoshoot for the legendary singer. Many felt Vidya Balan would be the perfect fit for the role back then, and the discussion has started again following the announcement of the M.S. Subbulakshmi biopic starring Rashmika Mandanna.

Speaking to Variety India recently, Vidya revealed that she was supposed to make a film on M.S. Subbulakshmi with Rajiv Menon around 2012 or 2013. But the project could not move forward because of a stay order. She said she was heartbroken as she had really wanted to play the singer.

“I received seven film offers to play M.S. Subbulakshmi after the photoshoot came out. But I said, ‘Listen, if you get the permissions required, then I shall consider it. If not, I will not be able to do the film,’” she said.

Many still feel Vidya would have suited the role. But Rashmika is now set to play M.S. Subbulakshmi in the biopic. It remains to be seen how Gowtam Tinnanuri and Anirudh bring the legendary singer’s story to the screen.
