Mumbai: A case of brutal animal cruelty has shocked residents of Kandivali (West) after an elderly community dog named Princy died following a fall from the 15th floor of a high-rise, allegedly while trying to escape a violent assault by a security guard. The disturbing incident occurred around 8 AM at the Kalpavriksha building in Vasant Complex.
The video’s circulation triggered swift action from animal welfare advocates. Vijay Rangare, city president of People For Animals, helped resident Anjana Lakshapati file a formal complaint. Charkop police have since registered an FIR under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

What led to Princy’s fatal fall from 15th floor?
The footage shows Princy, a familiar and gentle presence in the neighbourhood, being chased through the building by Mahavir Verma, a watchman employed by Shivam Protection Force. In the video, Verma is seen wielding a stick as he pursues the frightened dog, who eventually runs up to the 17th floor before descending to the 15th in a desperate search for safety.
Unable to find shelter, Princy climbed onto a shoebox near an open window. Moments later, Verma is seen striking her again. In a final, terrified attempt to escape, the dog jumped from the window. She died instantly upon impact.
Initially dismissed as a tragic fall, the truth emerged when residents reviewed the CCTV footage. One neighbour, unaware of the circumstances, had already taken the dog’s body to a vet and performed last rites.

The cat, belonging to a resident on the 21st floor, had been picked up from a shoe rack before the accused, Kasam Sayyed, flung her out of a window and leaned forward to check if she had fallen.
