‘Very unfair’: Ex-India spinner reacts to Yashasvi Jaiswal’s ODI squad snub for NZ series

New Delhi: Former India spinner   has questioned Yashasvi Jaiswal’s snub from the ODI squad for the upcoming series against New Zealand, warning that the lack of game time could hamper his confidence.

He believes team management and selectors should find a way to play Jaiswal, especially after his recent form.

but Jaiswal was dropped from the 50-over team. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said that the young opener should have been selected for the last two ODI matches, especially with Shubman Gill’s unavailability for those games.

“If Shubman Gill is not playing the last two ODIs, then Yashasvi Jaiswal should definitely get that spot. It is very unfortunate because all of this can ruin his confidence. Now, with the way he was scoring runs,” Ashwin said.

“I can understand Shubman Gill’s situation because he is travelling. I can also understand KL Rahul’s situation. But Yashasvi Jaiswal has no game time at all, right? I am not talking from a perspective of just handing Jaiswal opportunities,” he added.

Ashwin questions team management over Jaiswal’s limited chances

Jaiswal has been included in India’s squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against New Zealand and will also play for India A in a three-match series, which will begin on October 16 in Lincoln. However, the former spinner believes that preparations for the Test series should not come at the expense of opportunities in other formats.

“He was a run machine. If his confidence is getting ruined, it is the job of the team management and selectors to give him an opportunity wherever possible. But he has not been getting those opportunities at all. It has not gone to him. And it is very unfair,” Ashwin added.

The five-match ODI series between India and New Zealand will begin on November 4 at Eden Park in Auckland.
