Story of Varuthini Ekadashi
According to the legend, in ancient times a king named Mandhata used to rule on the banks of river Narmada. He was very charitable and ascetic. One day he was meditating and doing penance in the forest itself. Then suddenly a wild bear came there and started eating the feet of the king engrossed in penance, but the king remained engrossed in penance. After some time, the bear, eating his feet, dragged the king to the nearby forest.
The king was very frightened, but as per his religion he did not resort to anger and violence. The king prayed to Lord Vishnu. Hearing the king’s prayer, Shri Hari Vishnu appeared and killed the bear with his chakra. The bear had already eaten the king’s leg. This made the king very sad. Seeing the king sad, Lord Vishnu told him, O king, do not be sad. Go to Mathura and observe the fast of Varuthini Ekadashi and worship my Varaha avatar. With its effect you will again get strong body parts. The reason for this bear’s bite was the crime of your previous birth.
Following the orders of God, King Mandhata went to Mathura and observed the fast of Varuthini Ekadashi with devotion. Due to the effect of fasting, the king again got beautiful and perfect body parts. After death the king went to heaven. That is why it is said that by observing Varuthini Ekadashi fast one gets salvation by destroying all sins.
