Vaibhav Sooryavanshi 3 sixes away from breaking massive IPL record in RR’s clash against DC

New Delhi: Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) young sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is on the cusp of breaking Abhishek Sharma’s record for most sixes by an Indian in a single season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Sooryavanshi needs only three sixes in RR’s clash against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Sunday to shatter Abhishek’s record.

15-year-old Sooryavanshi has been in stellar form for the Rajasthan Royals in the ongoing IPL 2026 as he continues to prove his mettle against some of the best bowlers in the world. The teenage sensation is currently leading the six-hitting charts in the IPL 2026 with 40 maximums to his name so far this season.

He has smashed 40 sixes in just 11 innings, scoring over 50% of his 440 runs this season in maximums. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) opener Abhishek currently holds the record for most sixes by an Indian in an IPL season, with 42 sixes in the 2024 edition. Sooryavanshi needs only three sixes to go past him.

Most sixes by an Indian in a single edition of IPL:

Abhishek Sharma – 42 sixes, 2024

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi – 40 sixes, 2026*

Shreyas Iyer – 39 sixes, 2025

Virat Kohli – 38 sixes, 2016

Abhishek himself has been in destructive touch for SRH in the ongoing IPL 2026 and is not too far behind Sooryavanshi in the list of leading six-hitters in the tournament so far. The swashbuckling let-hander has smashed 37 sixes in 12 innings for SRH this season and has a great chance of finishing ahead of Sooryavanshi if he can continue his fine form in the rest of the tournament.

The legendary Chris Gayle currently holds the record for most sixes by a batter in a single season of the IPL. Gayle hit a whopping 59 sixes for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2012, the most by any batter. He is also the only batter to have hit over 50 sixes in an IPL season twice in his career.

Former Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Andre Russell is the only other batter to have hit more than 50 sixes in an IPL season. Russell smoked 52 sixes for KKR in IPL 2019. Abhishek’s 42 sixes in the IPL 2024 is the sixth-highest in the elite list of batters with most sixes in a single edition of the IPL.
