Jagran Correspondent, Pithoragarh: Torrential rain continues to lash Pithoragarh’s borders. The continuous rainfall in the mountains has caused the Kali River and other rivers in the district to overflow.
The water level of the Kali River has risen to over 888.30 metre, causing panic among people living in the coastal areas.
According to the Meteorological Department, Bangapani recorded the highest rainfall of 82 mm, followed by Dharchula with 43 mm and Tejam with 35 mm. Intermittent moderate rainfall continued in other tehsils as well.
The continuous rain has caused the hills to crack. The main road connecting the strategically important China border has been hit by landslides.
The Tanakpur-Tawaghat National Highway, the Kulagad, and the Tawaghat-Lipulekh road are closed due to debris near Malghat. The Munsyari-Milam road is also blocked due to debris, cutting off the China border from the mainland. Along with these major routes, 11 other rural and internal roads in the district are also closed, disrupting rural movement.
The 9th group of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra departed from Gunji on Sunday to visit Adi Kailash. After the pilgrimage, the group will reach Nabidhang and rest there for the night. Meanwhile, the 8th group in Tibet is circumambulating Mount Kailash. The 7th group will reach Chugu in Tibet and, after completing the circumambulation of Mansarovar, will arrive in Taklakot on Monday.
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon has fully intensified across Uttar Pradesh, bringing continuous heavy rainfall in many districts. According to the latest forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), while weather patterns will vary across different regions over the coming days, persistent shower spells will continue throughout the state. In addition to the heavy downpours, meteorologists have warned of thunderstorms and lightning.
