Dehradun: The tragic nightclub fire in Goa, which claimed 25 lives and left many injured, has prompted Uttarakhand police to take strong preventive steps. Nine victims were from Uttarakhand, making the incident even more alarming for the state.
Director General of Police (DGP) Deepam Seth chaired a high-level review meeting with senior officers from all districts, including Garhwal, Kumaon, railways, and the Special Task Force. He directed that a comprehensive fire safety audit of all establishments be completed within a week. The audits will cover cafes, pubs, bars, restaurants, hotels, banquet halls, event venues, malls, and other places where large crowds gather, especially during the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Strict action for violations
The DGP ordered thorough inspections of fire safety equipment. All fire hydrants in public and commercial areas must be functional. Establishments must have adequate firefighting equipment, fire extinguishers, and clearly marked emergency exits free of obstructions.
Staff working in these establishments must receive regular firefighting training. Surprise inspections will be conducted, and if violations are found, strict action will be taken under the rules.
Safety during Char Dham yatra
Special instructions were also issued for the winter Char Dham Yatra routes. Police and district officials must strengthen crowd management, emergency response systems, and traffic control to ensure the safety of pilgrims.
Crime and Law & Order review
Apart from fire safety, the meeting also reviewed crime control measures. The DGP directed:
Arrest of wanted criminals and return of parole or bail-released prisoners to jail.
Disposal of pending cases under the NDPS Act within the time limit.
Action against professional criminals under the Gangster Act and NDPS Act.
Confiscation of illegally acquired property as per rules.
Timely completion of departmental promotion processes for police personnel.
