Uttarakhand Elections 2027: Hat-trick of wins or losses, litmus test for BJP and Congress leadership in hill state

Dehradun: The upcoming Uttarakhand Assembly Elections 2027 are being seen as a decisive battle for both the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress.

For the BJP, it is about achieving a hat-trick of victories, while for Congress, it is about ending a hat-trick of defeats.

BJP’s Strategy

Uttarakhand’s sitting CM Pushkar Singh Dhami has already taken charge of the campaign. His focus is on balancing regional and social equations while filling five vacant cabinet seats in the final year of his government. This move is aimed at strengthening the party’s base across districts.

Dhami’s strategy has been to convert anti-incumbency into pro-incumbency by taking action against corruption, recruitment scams, and law-and-order issues. By addressing weaknesses and maintaining direct contact with the public through small meetings, he is trying to boost the morale of party workers and create a positive atmosphere.

The BJP’s central leadership is also closely monitoring the situation, ensuring that the state unit remains disciplined and prepared. Years of experience in countering Congress’s moves are now being used to sharpen the party’s campaign.

Congress’s Challenge

On the other hand, Congress is struggling to overcome internal strife. Recently, the party inducted six leaders, including two former MLAs, in New Delhi to strengthen its vote bank among Scheduled Castes and other communities. While this move was meant to energize the organization, it has instead exposed factional conflicts.

Former Chief Minister Harish Rawat distanced himself from the induction event, reportedly upset that his preference for including an independent candidate from Ramnagar was ignored. His dissatisfaction reflects the deeper divisions within the party.

Congress is trying to reorganize its structure and gain psychological advantage by inducting leaders district-wise, but the infighting remains a major obstacle. Without unity, the party faces difficulty in presenting itself as a strong alternative to the BJP.

Stakes in 2027

The 2027 elections are not just about numbers; they are about the political credibility of both parties. For BJP, a third consecutive win would cement its dominance in Uttarakhand. For Congress, even a single victory after nearly a decade would be a morale booster and a sign of revival.

BJP currently has an edge due to its organizational strength

Political observers believe that the BJP currently has an edge due to its organizational strength and Dhami’s proactive approach. However, Congress still has the potential to challenge if it can resolve internal disputes and present a united front.

As Uttarakhand heads towards the 2027 elections, the contest is shaping into a litmus test for both BJP and Congress. With Dhami leading from the front and Congress battling internal divisions, the outcome will determine whether the state witnesses a hat-trick of wins or a hat-trick of losses.
