Uttar Pradesh: Injured man dies after ambulance runs out of oxygen on way to hospital, police launches probe

New Delhi: In a horrific incident in Uttar Pradesh, an young man succumbed to his injuries after his ambulance ran out of oxygen and petrol while being taken to a hospital in Rampur. Following his death, his family vandalized the vehicle and informed the police. The deceased person’s body has been sent for a postmortem and the police has launched an investigation into the matter.

How did the incident take place?

The man, identified as 38-years-old Kuldeep Singh, was on his way from his home to his farm at around 10 pm on Wednesday night on his bike when he collided with a tractor from the same village. He suffered serious injuries and his family immediately rushed him to the district hospital’s emergency room. After first aid, doctors declared his condition critical and referred him to another hospital in Meerut.

The family then hired a private ambulance and took Kuldeep to Moradabad instead of Meerut. The family has alleged that on the way, the ambulance’s oxygen cylinder ran out of gas, and shortly after, the vehicle also ran out of petrol. Due to the lack of oxygen, Kuldeep died on the way. The incident took place in Ahmednagar Jibai village in Shahjahannagar police station. He was a resident of Jibai village in Ahmednagar and was a farmer by profession. He had four brothers, all of whom live separately. He is survived by his wife, an 8-year-old son, and an 11-year-old daughter.

Kuldeep’s nephew, Harvinder Singh, said, “We were halfway to Moradabad when the oxygen cylinder in the ambulance ran out of gas. We told the driver to speed up. After a little further, the ambulance ran out of petrol. Kuldeep died due to lack of oxygen.”

Police launches probe

Following Kuldeep’s death, the enraged family vandalized the ambulance. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, and the family informed the police about the incident. The police has launched a probe based on the complaint filed by the family. The ambulance in question is currently parked at the Majhola police station in Moradabad. According to reports, a fight broke out in front of Sai Hospital in Moradabad, and the police brought the ambulance to the station.

According to reports, ambulances must adhere to certain standards for operation. These include valid vehicle registration and permits, the availability of trained drivers and paramedical staff, a full and working oxygen cylinder, the availability of a stretcher, first aid kit, and basic life support (BLS) equipment. Furthermore, the ambulance must be ready for 24×7 service and maintain proper fitness, fuel, and technical condition.
