Story of Ekadashi Mata: The fast of Uttapanna Ekadashi is considered very important and special. This fast is observed on the Ekadashi date of Krishna Paksha of Margashirsha month. Ekadashi date is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. On the day of Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu is worshiped and fasted as per rituals. By fasting on Ekadashi one gets virtuous results. Happiness comes in life.
Uttapanna Ekadashi falling in the month of Margashirsha is even more special because all Ekadashi fasts in Hindu religion start from this date. According to the Panchang, this year Utpanna Ekadashi fast is on 15th November, so let us know the story of the birth of Devi Ekadashi.

According to mythology, Goddess Ekadashi was born from the body of Lord Shri Hari Vishnu, the protector of the world. He was born because of a very powerful demon ‘Mur’. The demon Mur was in Satyayuga and was extremely cruel. That demon had won over the gods with his power. Not only this, he had established his authority over heaven. Saddened by this, the gods took refuge in Lord Shiva. Then Lord Shiva asked him to go to Lord Vishnu.
A girl child was born from the glory of God’s body.
Lord Vishnu listened to the request of the gods and fought with Mur for many years. When Lord became tired from the war, he went to a cave in the Himalayas for rest and got absorbed in yoga nidra. When Mur saw the Lord absorbed in Yoga Nidra, he tried to attack him. At the same time a girl was born from the radiance of the Lord’s body. The girl was very divine and stunning. He challenged Mur to a fight and beheaded him. This did not break the Lord’s Yoganidra.
God named the girl ‘Ekadashi’
When Lord Vishnu woke up from yoga nidra, he found Mur dead. Then he was very pleased with the bravery of the girl. After this, while giving a boon to the girl, he said that you were born from my body and you were born on the Ekadashi day of Krishna Paksha of Margashirsha month, hence your name will be ‘Ekadashi’. God also said that whoever worships you along with me, all his sins will be destroyed and he will attain salvation. This is the reason why Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Margashirsha month is Utpana Ekadashi. This is the first Ekadashi among the 24 Ekadashis.
