US Tariff: ‘India should also put 50% tariff on American goods’ says Shashi Tharoor

New Delhi: Following the announcement of a 25 per cent additional tariff by the US on Indian goods, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Thursday said that Indian should not intimidate and put a 50 per cent tariff on American goods.

He said that India must not stop at the current 17 per cent tariff on US goods. He said that no other country should be able to threaten India like this.

Talking to the reporters, Tharoor said, “It will definitely have an impact because we have a trade of $90 billion with the US, and if a 50 per cent tariff is added, why would the buyers think of purchasing from India? We should also impose a 50 per cent tariff on American exports. No country can get away with threatening India like this.”

“We have currently put a 17 per cent tariff on American goods. Why should we stop at 17 per cent? We should also raise it to 50 per cent. We need to ask them, do they not value our relationship? If India does not matter to them, they should also not matter to us,” he added.
