US Open: Auger-Aliassime stuns Zverev as De Minaur, Bublik cruise into next round

New Delhi: Felix Aufer-Aliassime arrived at Flushing Meadows carrying the weight of a difficult season in the majors. When he exited early at the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon had left questions about his form but under the light on Louis Armstrong Stadium the Canadian rediscovered his spark. Aliassime registered a four-set thrilling upset over third seed Alexander Zverev 4-6, 706(7), 6-4, 6-4 to book a place in the fourth round.

Zerev was aiming for a major lift and even had the lead in head-to-head before this clash and looked on course for another victory when he served for a two-set lead in the tiebreak, but the Canadian held firm, saved the danger and never looked back.

The 25th seed’s attacking intent defined the night. He stormed the net with confidence, winning 24 of 27 points at the front of the court and kept the German under pressure for nearly four hours. “This feels good, really good,” the Canadian said after his win. “It’s been years of hard work, and matches like this mean a lot.”

Auger-Aliassime will next play Andrey Rublev in the round of 16. Rublev also had to dig deep to seal a victory in a five-setter over Coleman Wong. The 25th seed will head into the contest with renewed confidence after taking out one of the tournament’s big names.

De Minaur keeps rolling

Alex de Minaur booked his place in the last 16 for the fifth time in his US Open career. The Australian eighth seed advanced when Germany’s Daniel Altmaier retired early in the fourth set with injury. De Minaur, who dropped the opening set in a tiebreak, had already fought back strongly to lead 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-4, 2-0 before the match came to an abrupt end.

It was another hardcourt milestone for the 25-year-old as he now owns 27 wins on the surface this season, more than any other player on the ATP Tour.

He will next face Swiss qualifier Leandro Reidi in a bid to reach the quarter-finals, who also advanced after his opponent Kamil Majchrzak retired after the first set.

Bublik edges five set battle

Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik also secured his place in the fourth round after surviving an epic clash against American Tommy Paul. The 23rd seed prevailed 7-6(5), 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1 in just under four hours.

Paul wasn’t ready to surrender easily as the Americans dig deep to snatch the fourth set 7-5, keeping his hope alive, pushing the match deep into the night. But in the decider, Bublik took charge from the very first point and took the final set by a scoreline of 6-1.

The 23rd seed will next play reigning champion Jannik Sinner in the round of 16. Sinner fought back after trailing one set down to seal the victory over Denis Shapovalov.
