US Embassy warns tourist-visa applicants against ‘birth tourism’

The US Embassy in India has issued a strong warning to tourist-visa applicants, signalling a renewed crackdown on what Washington describes as “birth tourism”. In a post on X, the embassy stated that any applicant suspected of intending to travel to the United States primarily to give birth, as a means of securing American citizenship for the child, will have their tourist visa denied immediately.

“US consular officers will deny tourist visa applications if they believe the primary purpose of travel is to give birth in the United States to obtain US citizenship for the child. This is not permitted,” the embassy said.
