Raising the issue of obscene song ‘Sarke Chunar’ in the Lok Sabha, Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said, “The song has been banned. We should work as per appropriate restrictions under freedom of expression. Freedom of speech cannot be absolute, it has to be seen in the context of society and culture.” Samajwadi Party MP Anand Bhadauria had sought a response from the government on this controversial song, after which the matter reached Parliament.

Only Hindi version of ‘Sarke Chunar’ removed from YouTube

The song ‘Sarke Chunar’ got embroiled in controversy as soon as it was released online. Audiences described its lyrics as ‘obscene’ and the visuals as ‘provocative’. Following growing opposition, its Hindi version was removed from YouTube, although Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam versions are still available on the platform.

When there was a dispute over lyrics, the lyricist distanced himself from it.

As soon as the controversy over ‘Sarke Chunar’ arose, its Hindi lyricist Rakib Alam has distanced himself from the matter. He said in a statement, “I have not written these lyrics. They were written in Kannada by the film’s director Prem. When I was asked to write them, I had refused, but later I was only asked to translate them.” He also told that now the film team is getting him to write a new version with clean lyrics.

Celebrities and leaders expressed displeasure over the song

Many celebrities and leaders have also expressed their displeasure over the song ‘Sarke Chunar’. Kangana Ranaut accused Bollywood of ‘crossing all limits of vulgarity’. Ravi Kishan said that such content should not be promoted which harms cultural values. Singer Armaan Malik also wrote on social media that “commercial songwriting has reached a new low.”

Song ‘Sarke Chunar’ stuck in legal trouble, complaint filed

This dispute has now also taken a legal turn. Lawyer Vineet Jindal filed a complaint against the song, saying that extremely obscene and objectionable words have been used in it and its visuals affect public decency. It is being told that after the controversy, the makers can release a new version of the song with an apology.
