Updated WTC points table after Australia win fifth Ashes Test by five wickets in Sydney

New Delhi: Australia beat England by five wickets in the fifth Ashes Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground on January 8. The Aussies clinched the five-match series by 4-1. Chasing the 160-run target, the hosts had nervous moments, but safely got over the line before tea on the final day.

Resuming on 320/8, the visitors got off to a steady start as Matthew Potts hit a boundary on the first ball of the day. Jacob Bethel also completed his 150, but Starc picked up last two wickets to bundle England out for 342 runs.

Chasing the target, Travis Head and Jake Weatherald gave Australia a flying start. The duo stitched a 62-run partnership for the first wicket to lay down the foundation of the run chase. They continued to score at a high pace, but the Three Lions made a comeback and removed both openers before lunch.

The hosts needed just 87 runs after the lunch break, but the tough conditions at the SCG meant that England continued to create opportunities to keep themselves in the match. Will Jacks found a sharp turn from the surface to remove Steve Smith after lunch.

Khawaja was removed by Josh Tongue cheaply in his final Test, and Labuschagne got run out in the following over as the visitors sensed an opportunity to grab a win in Perth. But, Carey and Green forged a 40-run partnership to take their over the line as Australia sealed the five-match series by 4-1.
