There has been a huge reduction in crime in UP due to the zero tolerance policy of Yogi government. Campaigns like encounters, strict laws and Mission Shakti strengthened women’s security and made the state safe for investment.

Lucknow. The Yogi government has continuously taken strict action against crime and criminals in the last nine years by adopting a zero tolerance policy. As a result, law and order has been strengthened in the state and effective control over criminals has been established. The government claims that now daughters in Uttar Pradesh are working fearlessly even in night shifts. Due to better law and order, the state has emerged as a safe place for the general public, businessmen and investors. This has also increased investment and economic activities.

Encounter and strict action: Strong attack on criminals

Under the zero tolerance policy, the Yogi government launched a campaign against criminals on a large scale. Since 2017, 269 criminals have been killed and 10,990 injured in police encounters. Apart from this, 22,306 rewarded criminals were arrested and sent to jail. Action was taken against 85,118 criminals under Gangster Act and 977 criminals under NSA.

The government also took action against illegal properties and seized assets worth more than Rs 145 billion 79 crore under the Gangster Act. Besides, 875 cases were registered against 68 identified mafia and their associates, in which 638 accused were arrested. Illegal assets worth more than Rs 4,137 crore were seized from these criminals, which had a major impact on the economic networks of the criminals.

Police Commissionerate System and Control of Riots

For better law and order in the state, Police Commissionerate system was implemented in 7 big cities. This led to improvements in policing and crime control. According to the government, there has been no major communal riot or caste conflict in the state since 2017, which is a sign of improvement in law and order.

Operation Conviction: Focus on punishing criminals

The Yogi government not only laid emphasis on arresting the criminals but also on punishing them. Under Operation Conviction, 1,25,985 accused were convicted. Of these, 79 criminals got death penalty, 10,414 got life imprisonment and 1,921 got more than 20 years. Apart from this, thousands of criminals were sentenced for different periods. While taking action against the identified mafia, 35 mafia and 94 associates were given life imprisonment and 2 criminals were given death penalty.

Reduction in crime rate: Effect visible in statistics

According to the government, there has been a significant reduction in many serious crimes as compared to the year 2016.

  • 90% reduction in robbery
  • 85% reduction in loot
  • 47% reduction in murders
  • 70% reduction in violence
  • 62% reduction in kidnapping for ransom
  • 19% reduction in dowry deaths
  • 53% reduction in rape cases

These figures show improvement in law and order.

Women Safety: Anti Romeo Squad and Mission Shakti

Giving priority to the safety of women, the government has launched several operations, such as Mission Shakti, Operation Garuda, Operation Shield, Operation Drishti, Operation Bachpan, Operation Khoj, Operation Destroy and Operation Raksha. Anti Romeo squads were formed in every district of the state. Under this, more than 5 crore people were investigated, in which 1.85 crore were warned and action was taken against 38,835 people. Arrangements have been made for quick resolution of complaints by integrating women’s helpline 1090, 181 and other services.

Strengthening of women police and security system

To strengthen women’s security in the state, the number of women police was increased.

  • Appointment of 19,839 women policemen
  • 9,172 women beat formed

Three women PAC battalions established

The process of new battalions continues in Balrampur, Jalaun, Mirzapur, Shamli and Bijnor. Mission Shakti Centers were established in each police station and about 40 thousand policemen were given training.

UP number-1 in disposal of women’s cases

According to the government, Uttar Pradesh has made significant progress in the field of women’s safety.

Between September 2025 to December 2025:

  • 33.92% reduction in rape
  • 17.03% reduction in kidnapping
  • 12.96% reduction in dowry deaths
  • 9.54% reduction in domestic violence

The disposal rate of women related cases has reached 98.90%, which is the highest in the country. The pendency rate is also only 0.20%, making UP on top in this matter. Apart from this, thousands of accused have been convicted in cases related to women and children, which has further strengthened the justice system.
