UP man performs 9-km Dandvat Yatra to celebrate divorce

Basti: A peculiar incident from Uttar Pradesh’s Basti district has sparked discussion after a man fulfilled a religious vow after his divorce. He performed a 9-kilometre Dandvat Yatra to a temple after his mannat was fulfilled. The act has drawn attention for its unusual nature and the message it reflects about modern relationships.

Marriage turned into distress

The man, identified as Suresh, had been married for two years when his relationship reportedly deteriorated due to constant disputes and mental stress. Unable to cope, he sought relief through legal means and also turned to faith during the difficult phase.

Mannat for divorce

Suresh had visited a local temple dedicated to Maa Bairwa Samay Mata and made an unusual vow. He prayed not for harmony, but for separation from his wife. He promised that if his wish was fulfilled, he would undertake a ‘Dandvat Yatra’ (a full-body prostration journey) from his home to the temple.

9-km Dandvat Yatra

After a prolonged legal battle, the man was granted a divorce. To honour his vow, he set out on a 9-km journey from his village to the temple in Bhanpur. Without food or water, he completed the ritual by prostrating his body repeatedly along the route.

What surprised many was that Suresh was not alone. His parents and several villagers accompanied him, chanting religious mantras and celebrating the occasion. Instead of mourning a broken marriage, the event turned into a public display of devotion and relief.

By the time he reached the temple in the evening, visibly exhausted and injured, Suresh expressed relief and peace. The incident has prompted conversations about rising marital conflicts, mental stress and whether faith is becoming a way to cope with failing relationships.
