Major improvements in the health sector have come to light in the Economic Survey 2025-26 report of the UP government. The number of medical colleges increased from 36 to 81, lakhs of people got treatment and tele-consultation through mobile medical units and e-Sanjeevani.
Lucknow. Finance Minister Suresh Khanna tabled the Economic Survey Report of Uttar Pradesh Government for the year 2025-26 in the budget session of the Assembly on Monday. In the report, special emphasis was laid on strengthening of health facilities and expansion of medical infrastructure in the state. He said that the effect of the planned efforts made by the government is now clearly visible on the ground. Access, quality and capacity of health services have continuously improved.
Health system strengthened by expansion of medical infrastructure
The Finance Minister said that there has been a historic increase in the number of government and private medical colleges in the state. This has not only increased the availability of health services, but opportunities for medical education have also increased rapidly. The government has made effective use of modern technology to provide medical facilities to rural and remote areas.
Record increase in the number of medical colleges in UP
Suresh Khanna said that till the year 2017, there were a total of 36 medical colleges in the state, which included 15 government and 21 private medical colleges. Due to the priority of the government, the number of medical colleges has increased to 81 by the end of the year 2025. These include 45 government and 36 private medical colleges. With this increase, health services have improved in different areas of the state and a large number of new doctors are being trained every year.
Establishment of Atal Bihari Vajpayee State Medical University
Atal Bihari Vajpayee State Medical University has been established to ensure uniformity in the quality and examinations of medical and dental education in the state. This has given an organized and standardized framework to medical education.
Treatment from village to village through mobile medical unit
Mobile Medical Unit service was started to provide health services to people living in rural and remote areas. At present, a total of 170 mobile medical units are operating in 54 districts of the state. So far, more than 2.05 crore patients have been treated through these units. This service is proving to be extremely useful for those who have difficulty reaching the hospital.
More than 22 lakh OPD consultations through e-Sanjeevani telemedicine service
By promoting modern technology in the state, telemedicine services have also been expanded rapidly. As per the guidelines of Government of India, e-Sanjeevani tele consultation service was started from 11 May 2021. At present this service is operational in 26 medical colleges of the state. So far 22,53,320 OPD teleconsultations have been given. With this service, patients are getting advice from expert doctors sitting at home, thereby saving both time and expense.
