7 new drain projects are being built in 2025-26 to strengthen irrigation and water management in Uttar Pradesh. Also, a target has been set to clean 17,500 km of drains, which will lead to flood control, better irrigation and improvement in the income of farmers.
Lucknow. The Irrigation and Water Resources Department is making continuous efforts to strengthen agricultural development and rural economy in Uttar Pradesh. Special attention is being given to better water management, timely irrigation facility to farmers, reduction in flood problem and expansion of drainage system and regular cleaning of drains with the aim of increasing income.
Construction of 7 new drain projects in the financial year 2025-26
To further strengthen the irrigation system during the financial year 2025-26, 7 new drain projects have been approved in various districts of the state. These projects will ease the drainage of excess water from the fields and provide relief from the problem of waterlogging.
Drain projects in Bahraich, Bijnor, Gonda, Hapur and Meerut.
Under the new drain projects, one drain each in Gonda, Hapur and Meerut and two drain projects each in Bijnor and Bahraich have been approved. A total of Rs 74.33 crore will be spent on all these projects. With the completion of the projects, the drainage system in the respective areas will be strengthened and better irrigation facilities will be available to the farmers. This will also strengthen Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision of “water to every field”.
Cleaning of drains improves flood control and irrigation.
Regular cleaning of drains is very important to improve flood control and irrigation system in rural areas. Due to floods and water flow throughout the year, silt and silt gets accumulated in the drains, due to which there is difficulty in reaching the water to the fields.
Target to clean 17,500 km drains
A target has been set to clean 17,500 km of drains in the financial year 2025-26. So far, the work of cleaning 11,065 km of drains has almost been completed. The remaining cleaning work is targeted to be completed by March 2026.
Monitoring of department on timely and quality work
All the works are being regularly monitored by the Irrigation and Water Resources Department, so that the projects are completed with quality within the stipulated time frame. This will provide adequate irrigation water to farmers, reduce the problem of waterlogging and floods and improve agricultural production as well as rural living standards.
