New Delhi: A Redditor from Gujarat detailed an incident that revealed the struggles and sacrifices of an auto driver. The post triggered a conversation online. Netizens were quick to comment on the everyday battles faced by people, especially those from the working class.
The post shared on the r/India subreddit was captioned, “The kind of India we ignore.” In the [post, the Redditor claimed that he had booked an auto after 11 pm. On getting into the auto, he got into a conversation with the driver. The Redditor described the auto driver to be a weary looking man in his 50s. When the Redditor asked the man why he worked late, he revealed that his daily earning was not enough to cover his family’s expenses that included the education of his two daughters.

He told the Redditor that he worked late to ensure the continuation of his children’s education. “Bhaiya, do betiyan hain. Ek ke liye coaching fees deni hai, doosri ke school ka kharcha. Raat ko chalata hoon taaki unki padhai na ruk jaye (I have two daughters. For one, I need to pay coaching fees, and for the other, school expenses. I drive at night so that their education doesn’t stop),” said the auto driver to the Redditor.
He also added how seeing dreams was impossible for the poor. He added that he was trying to vicariously fulfill his desires through his children. He concluded that his only prayer is to have the strength to drive again tomorrow.
The post left many devastated. One person stated that it was unfortunate to hear that the man had to work odd hours just to educate his kids. Many netizens thanked the Redditor for shedding light on the silent hardships of India’s underprivileged population.
Another individual shared that he has had several such conversations with cab and auto drivers.
