Unhappy over custody order, 15-year-old girl jumps from Madras High Court, survives

A 15-year-old girl, who had appeared for a custody hearing at the Madras High Court, jumped from the court’s first floor in an apparent suicide attempt.

The girl survived with serious injuries and was immediately rescued by court staff before being rushed to the hospital.

The case involved a Habeas Corpus petition filed by the girl’s father, who claimed that his daughter was missing and sought custody of her. The dispute arose after the girl’s mother, originally from the Andaman Islands, remarried. The father is from Neelankarai, near Chennai.

Following the petition, the High Court ordered that the girl be placed in a care home pending a psychiatric evaluation. The court noted the girl’s wish to live with her grandmother rather than with either parent.

Distressed by the court’s decision, the girl suddenly jumped from the first floor of the High Court building. Both the CISF and Tamil Nadu Police have launched an investigation into the matter.

In another incident from June, a woman died and her husband and two children were critically injured after jumping from the Medak district court building in Telangana.

Police said the couple, Ramya and Naveen, had a history of disputes, including a previous criminal case.
