Ujjain student killed in Canada after brutal assault, family faces Rs 45 lakh Repatriation cost

New Delhi: A young boy from Ujjain who went to pursue higher studies in Canada was first assaulted by a group of 10 to 12 students and later run over by a vehicle. The doctors declared him dead on arrival.

The dream of a family was shattered as his father was now waiting for his son’s final rites, not his son’s call. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav met the victim’s family and also visited their house. He also assured them that the state would stand by them, not just in grief but in difficult times also.

CM confirmed that the state government is in touch with the Canadian government through the Indian government. “This is our family, our city’s child. The government will support whatever decision the family takes,” he added.

The victim was pursuing a Post-Degree Diploma in Business Management at Northern Light College in Fort St. John.

The family is waiting for their loved one’s body to do final rites, but the hospital procedures will take another two weeks to transport the body to Ujjain. The Canadian authorities have asked to deposit around 35 lakhs to transport their son’s body back to India. After that, transporting the body to Ujjain in his hometown would cost an additional Rs 10 lakh.

Gurkirat’s father took an education loan to send his son to pursue studies. He works in the food industry to fulfil the family’s needs. Gurkirat’s family lives in a rented house, and it’ll be a financial collapse for the family to pay nearly Rs 45 lakh to the authorities.

Gurkirat’s father wrote an appeal: “I took a loan to send him abroad; I wanted him to have a better life. I do not have the means to even bring him back.”

He also penned a note to Member of Parliament Anil Firojiya and the chief minister to urge immediate assistance in the matter. Gurjeet Singh and family now want to perform the last rites in Canada and bring the son’s ashes back to India.

Gurjeet appealed for an expedited visa for his brother and cousin and also sought Rs 50 lakh assistance to cover their travel and hospital-related expenses. Firojiya and CM assured full support to the family.
