United Arab Emirates (UAE) cricket team captain Muhammad Waseem etched his name in the history books and broke a world record of Indain cricket legend Rohit Sharma despite his team’s 39-run defeat to Afghanistan in the ongoing T20I tri-series, also featuring Pakistan on Monday (September 1) at the Sharjah Cricket Ground.
Chasing a total of 189, Waseem led a long fight for the hosts with a flamboyant knock of 67 in just 37 balls, which included four boundaries and six maximums. The innings came at a strike-rate of 181.08. While Rahul Chopra also scored a half-century, UAE collapsed after Waseem’s departure and went from 90-3 to 122-8 but managed to end with 150 runs on the board
Muhammad Waseem Creates History
With his six-hitting display against Rashid Khan and Co, Waseem went past Rohit to become the player with the most sixes in T20Is. The UAE skipper now has 110 maximums to his name in the shortest format of the game, while Rohit hit 105 before retiring post the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Rohit and Waseem are the only players to score over 100 sixes at the international level in T20I cricket.
Most Sixes In T20Is As Captain
Player | Country | Sixes | Matches |
Muhammad Waseem | UAE | 110 | 54 |
Rohit Sharma | India | 105 | 62 |
Eoin Morgan | England | 86 | 72 |
Aaron Finch | Australia | 82 | 76 |
Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming | Japan | 79 | 39 |
Waseem’s run tally of 1857 runs is also the fifth-highest by a captain, and he is only 48 runs behind Rohit on the elite list. The 31-year-old has a realistic chance of topping the list and will chase Babar Azam, Aaron Finch, and Kane Williamson.
Through his knock against Afghanistan, Waseem also climbed to second on the all-time list for most sixes in T20Is (176), going past Martin Guptill. Rohit (205) leads the list and is the only player to smash over 200 maximums in the format.
Waseem will face India for the first time in his career on 10th September in the 2025 Asia Cup at the Dubai International Stadium.
