Two Nipah cases confirmed in Kerala; Health dept issues alert in Malappuram, Kozhikode and Palakkad

Kozhikode: Two cases of Nipah being reported – one from Malappuram and the other from Kozhikode in the past three days has raised concerns of more cases that could be reported in the coming days. In the first case, a young girl aged 18 who was admitted with Nipah like symptoms at Kottakkal hospital succumbed to illness on July 1. The second case was reported where a 39-year-old woman from Palakkad was tested positive and is currently under treatment.

Health authorities in Palakkad have been placed on high alert after a 39-year-old woman from Kizhakkumpuram in Thachanattukara grama panchayat in the district, was admitted to a private hospital in Perinthalmanna with suspected Nipah virus infection. The woman is currently on ventilator support and is reported to be in critical condition, according to officials at the Palakkad District Medical Office.

“She had been admitted with high fever and breathing issues three days ago. She did not show any signs of recovery and hence we had keep her under ventilator support. Her situation is critical”, said a health official at the Palakkad District Medical Office.

The 38-year-old woman was initially admitted in two hospitals and later moved to the Kozhikode medical college where she was confirmed with Nipah virus.

Health officials are actively tracing her contacts and monitoring those who came in contact with her in the past one month.

A review meeting was conducted on Thursday by the Palakkad DMO to assess the situation and take necessary steps.
