Major changes have been made in visa rules for Indians planning international travel in 2026. Iran and Bolivia will no longer provide easy or visa-free entry to Indian passport holders.
Countries Requiring Visa for Indians: For Indians planning international travel, the situation is a little different in 2026. On one hand, the ranking of the Indian passport has improved, but on the other hand, the rules for entry into some countries have become stricter. In the Henley Passport Index 2026, India has reached 80th position, which is considered an improvement compared to last year. However, an important update has also come out with this report which directly affects the plans of the passengers. In 2026, the number of countries where Indian passport holders can enter without visa or with easy entry has reduced. Earlier, Indians could easily travel to 57 countries, but now this number has reduced to 55. This is due to two countries, Iran and Bolivia, which have changed their entry rules.
Why did Iran change the rules?
Iran no longer allows visa-free entry to Indian citizens. In some cases reported in late 2025, Indians were taken to Iran under the pretext of jobs and transit. Upon arrival, several people were kidnapped and ransom was demanded. Following these incidents, due to security reasons, Iran closed visa-free facility for ordinary Indian passport holders from November 2025. Now, it is mandatory to obtain a visa in advance to travel to or transit through Iran.
What was the situation earlier?
By 2025, Iran will allow Indians to travel without visas for a limited period of time. However, this was subject to conditions such as required documents and limit of stay. This facility has now been completely discontinued.
Bolivia also changed its system
Bolivia has also tightened its rules for Indian travelers. From 2026, Indians will have to obtain an online e-Visa before traveling to Bolivia. The process involves a digital form, required documents and online fee. After approval, the visa is issued electronically and must be produced at the time of travel.

How was the entry into Bolivia in 2025?
Till last year, Bolivia provided visa on arrival facility to Indian citizens. This meant that visas were issued on arrival at the airport, and no prior approval was required. For this reason, it was considered one of the countries with easy entry.
What does this mean for Indian travelers?
After changes in rules in Iran and Bolivia, Indians will have to prepare in advance to travel to these countries in 2026. Even though passport rankings have improved, it has become even more important to check the latest visa rules before travelling.
