Turkmenistan has finally opened its new e-Visa system, making it easier for foreign travellers to apply for entry without going through the country’s traditional invitation-letter process.
The electronic visa system officially launched on October 1, 2026. For tourist applicants, the biggest change is clear: the mandatory invitation letter is no longer listed as a requirement for the new tourist e-Visa.
Three e-Visa Categories
The official portal lists three types of electronic visas:
- e-TU: Tourism
- e-BS: Business travel, for stays of up to 30 days
- e-HM: Humanitarian travel
Tourist applicants need a passport valid for at least six months from the date of entry, a recent colour photograph and a valid email address.
A travel itinerary, hotel booking and medical insurance are listed as optional for tourist applicants.
For business and humanitarian visas, invitation letters remain required from the relevant Turkmen company, organisation or UN agency.
Turkmenistan e-Visa Processing Time
The new system offers three processing options:
- Regular: 7 business days
- Urgent: 3 business days
- Super urgent: 24 hours
The government has not yet published a fixed fee schedule. The visa fee is calculated during the online application process and must be paid in US dollars.
For Indian travellers, this is a major practical improvement. The old invitation-based process added another layer before a tourist visa application could even move forward.
What Indian Travellers Need to Know
The e-Visa portal is available in English, Russian and Turkmen. Applicants are expected to submit documents, make payment and track their application online.
However, there is one immediate catch.
The portal currently has a login page but no visible option to create a new account. That means the system is technically live, but new applicants may not yet be able to start an application from scratch.
This is typical of newly launched government visa portals: the policy can be ready before the digital machinery is fully operational.
Turkmenistan has also launched a separate online platform for registering foreign nationals during their stay. That service is different from the e-Visa system.
Travelobiz Take:
We see Turkmenistan’s e-Visa as a welcome step for Indian travellers, but the missing registration option means we would wait before making firm travel plans around it.
