Who gave Tulsi the boon of becoming a plant?
– The story of Tulsi is described in Shivmahapuran. According to him, once upon a time there was a demon named Shankhchud. Shankhachud was very mighty, even the gods could not stand in front of him. Shankhachuda was married to Tulsi, daughter of Dharmadhwaja. Tulsi was a devoted woman, due to which Shankhachud’s bravery increased further.
– Shankhchud also took control of heaven with his might. Then all the gods went to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu asked him to go to Mahadev. Mahadev got ready to fight with Shankhchud. The armies of gods and demons came face to face in the battlefield and a fierce battle began between the two.

– When Mahadev raised his trident to kill Shankhchud, then a voice came from the sky, ‘As long as the chastity of Shankhchud’s wife Tulsi remains unbroken, it will not be possible to kill him.’ Hearing the words of Akashvani, Lord Vishnu took the form of Shankhachud and went to Tulsi and destroyed her chastity.
As soon as this happened, Mahadev killed Shankhchud. Tulsi became very sad after knowing the truth and cursed Lord Vishnu to turn into a stone. Lord Vishnu accepted the curse and said, ‘You will incarnate on earth in the form of a Tulsi plant. Tulsi will be specially used in my puja.
Since then the Tulsi plant has been considered very special in Hindu religion. Tulsi leaves are definitely added to the offerings to Lord Vishnu and Shri Krishna. Only Tulsi rosary is used in chanting his mantras. On every Devuthani Ekadashi, the marriage of Tulsi and Shaligram is performed.
