Trump, Putin To Meet In Alaska On August 15 To Discuss Russia-Ukraine Peace Deal

Trump-Putin meeting 2025: US President Donald Trump on Friday said that he would meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15, 2025, to discuss plans for halting the raging war in Ukraine. The meeting, as confirmed by the Kremlin, will be the first face-to-face encounter between a sitting US and Russian president since 2021. “The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin of Russia will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.

Focus On Ukraine Conflict

Trump informed White House reporters that the negotiations could include a “swapping of territories to the betterment of both” Russia and Ukraine, without further explanation. Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov indicated the summit would “undoubtedly work on obtaining a long-term peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian crisis.” The conflict, which started with Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and millions of displaced people. Several rounds of talks between Kyiv and Moscow have yet to yield a breakthrough.

The Kremlin said an official invitation has been extended to Trump to visit Russia in the future. “Looking ahead, it is natural to hope that the next meeting will be held on Russian territory,” Ushakov noted. Putin’s visit to Alaska will be his first trip to the US in a decade. He last visited in 2015 to meet then-President Barack Obama at the UN General Assembly in New York.

Ahead of the Alaska talks, Putin held consultations with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Both leaders have pushed their own peace initiatives for Ukraine, though without major progress. The Kremlin reported Xi supported a “long-term” resolution and encouraged direct talks between Washington and Moscow. PM Modi also spoke with Putin over the Ukraine crisis during a telephone conversation, in which both leaders also condemned new US tariffs for India’s oil purchases from Russia.

Zelensky has repeatedly said that Ukraine must be part of any direct negotiations between Washington and Moscow. “It is only fair that Ukraine should be a participant in the negotiations,” he stated in his Thursday night address. Meanwhile, Russian forces continue to advance in eastern Ukraine. Donetsk governor Vadym Filashkin announced the evacuation of families with children from 19 frontline villages.
