‘Trump may listen to PM Modi’: Retd US Army colonel pitches India as mediator in Iran war, rejects Pakistan

New Delhi: The war between the United States-Israel camp and Iran is going through a brief period of pause, and amid that, the world is searching for peace. The question of who will mediate the talks between the two camps are doing the rounds, and whoever ends up getting the responsibility can gain immense prestige in the global political arena.

Douglas Macgregor hails PM Modi, India

Geopolitical risk advisor, Colonel (Retd) Douglas Macgregor while speaking with news agency ANI said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi could play a major role in diffusing tension between the two camps. He questioned Pakistan’s credibility as a mediator and hailed India as the nation better placed than most other to help broker peace amid chaos.

He said, “The reason I pick India is because I think President Trump, if he listens to anybody at this point, is probably going to listen to Prime Minister Modi”. Hailing India’s strong geopolitical presence in the world order, he added, “You are this large and powerful state economically, even militarily more so than I think you appreciate.”

Macgregor added India is trusted by major global powers from Russia and Iran to Israel and the US which would make it better suited as a mediator. He said, “This is someone who is at ease with Putin in Moscow comfortable talking to the leadership in Tehran the Israelis are comfortable with him. We are comfortable with India.” He added, “I would urge Prime Minister Modi to call President Trump and say we can do more for you.”

What did he say on Pakistan?

Meanwhile, regarding Pakistan’s decision to offer mediation, Macgregor said, “For the Pakistanis to offer help is sort of like a man who is in a burning building offering you a spare room in the building. Pakistan has enormous problems. I mean, financially they’re insolvent and so forth.” He added, “Pakistan is not going to be viewed in any way, shape or form as neutral by the Israelis. They’re going to view Pakistan as part of the problem.”

He also asked, The Pakistani government has said that if the Israelis should use a nuclear weapon they will in turn strike Israel Why would you go to Pakistan to try and close a deal?” Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has extended the deadline for possible strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure by ten more days. He said that Tehran requested for the pause and added that negotiations are going in a positive way so far. Earlier, Trump had announced a pause in all strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for five days.
