Trump imposed 100 percent additional tariff on China, will these goods become expensive now?

US President Donald Trump.

After the announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize, US President Donald Trump is back again with the threat of tariffs. Since assuming power, with the desire to make America great, Trump has imposed tariff rates on countries around the world, the impact of which was seen on America’s economy. Trump calmed down for a few days. But today he suddenly announced 100 percent additional duty on his old tariff rival China. In his statement, he praised China a lot and responded to the threat given by China on rare earths in his usual style. The new rates will be applicable from November 1.

Imposing tariffs on China will also affect America. But China will have to suffer huge losses due to this. Apart from this, America will also implement export control on all important software. Trump called it a strong reaction against China’s trade policies.

Impact on technology sector

The impact of the implementation of new tariff rates towards America can be seen on the tech sector. Because the Trump government has clearly talked about strictness on software exports. If we talk about old data, the US Commerce Department has expanded the scope of export control on items like advanced computing software and AI model-weights under the rules issued in January 2025. This does not mean that every type of software will be banned, but only categories related to security-sensitive or advanced computing will be controlled. However, this will definitely cause loss to the tech sector.

Earlier in April 2025, the US administration had given temporary relief in the tariffs already applicable on some smartphones, personal computers and chips. But under the latest policy, there has been a proposal to add additional tariff up to 100%, which may further increase the already applicable duty of 25%-50% on semiconductors and 25%-145% on electronics. This can result in a total effective rate of up to 125%-245% on some products. According to experts, if this tariff is fully implemented, it is possible that the prices of products like smartphones, laptops and EV batteries may increase by 2040%, although this is an economic estimate. The actual impact will depend on the supply chain and manufacturing sites.
