Triyuginarayan Temple: Divine wedding site of Shiv-Parvati where devotees throng every Karwa Chauth

New Delhi: Triyuginarayan Temple, perched in Uttarakhand’s scenic Rudraprayag district, is a living symbol of eternal love and divine faith. This ancient site of spirituality is renowned for conducting the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati in the presence of Lord Vishnu, who played the role of Parvati’s brother. The akhand dhuni or sacred fire is believed to have been self-ignited since the divine wedding took place at Triyuginarayan Temple and is maintained by the Jamloki Brahmins in the Kali Yuga to the present day.

Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the temple comes alive with the grand Gauri Shankar Vivah Puja during the auspicious occasions like Sawan and Karwa Chauth, re-enacting the divine wedding amidst chants, rituals, and festivity. This year, the temple committee will perform the puja on October 10 as Karwa Chauth falls on the same date. It is believed that the Gauri Shankar Vivah puja is organised for successful relationships and marriage. Delve deeper into the temple’s history and significance as a cultural tourism destination and spiritual site.

Triyuginarayan Temple history

The temple derives its name, Triyuginarayan, from three words, where Tri stands for three and Yug signifies ages (Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga and Dvapara Yuga) and Narayan represents another name for Lord Vishnu. This sacred site has sustained itself through three yugas, thus becoming one of the most ancient and divinely powerful places in existence. While the exact construction date is not precisely known, the temple’s history is believed to date back to the Vedic ages. The divine wedding of Shiva and Parvati is mentioned in the Skanda Purana, the Vishnu Purana and the Shiva Purana. But later, the temple’s construction is attributed to the renowned philosopher Adi Shankaracharya from the 8th century CE.

Triyuginarayan Temple architecture

Constructed in the traditional North Indian architectural style, the temple’s stone structure is similar to Kedarnath, exuding simplicity and ancient charm. Its sanctum houses a silver idol of Lord Vishnu, and there are four kunds or sacred water ponds near it.
