The end of Tarakasura and the penance of his sons

After Lord Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva and the commander of the gods, killed Tarakasura, his three sons started rigorous penance of Lord Brahma with a desire to take revenge from the gods. Then when Brahma ji became pleased and asked for a boon from all three, he said that three such wonderful cities should be built for them which would float in the air and come in line only in Abhijeet Nakshatra.

He also said that these three forts should be destroyed only when a peaceful person comes on an impossible chariot and hits all three forts with an infallible arrow in one shot. Lord Brahma gave a boon to all three. After receiving a boon from the creator of the universe, the three brothers i.e. Tripurasur created terror in the entire world. There was uproar everywhere. The gods were forced to leave heaven and run away. Tripurasura reigned in heaven.

Lord Shiva planned the end of Tripurasura.

At last the gods reached the shelter of Lord Shiva. On the prayers of the gods, Lord Shiva planned to end Tripurasura. Lord Vishnu himself became the arrow of Lord Shiva’s bow. The tip of the arrow became the fire god. Himalaya became the bow and Sheshnag became its string. Vishwakarma made the divine chariot for Lord Shiva. The wheels of the chariot became the Sun and the Moon. Whereas gods like Indra, Kuber, Yama and Varun became the horses of the chariot.

Lord Shiva sat on that divine chariot and went to the battlefield with weapons, where the three sons of Tarakasura were in their fort. At that time there was Abhijeet Nakshatra and all three cities were in a straight line. Lord Shiva took aim with his infallible arrow and fired it. All three temples of the demon’s sons were burnt to ashes by the arrow. Because of killing Tripurasura in this way, Lord Shiva was named Tripuraantaka.
