Hindu Yugas death Concept: In the four yugas described in Hinduism and Puranas, Satyayuga, Tretayuga, Dwaparayuga, and Kaliyuga, there is a huge difference not only in the moral conduct of human beings but also in their life span and nature of death. While in the present Kaliyuga, living for 100 years is considered rare, whereas in the era of Lord Rama, i.e. Tretayuga, people lived for 10 thousand years. The question arises that when man lived for 10,000 years, was the nature of death the same as today’s Kaliyuga? Let us understand this mystery in detail on the basis of Hindu scriptures.

What was the age of man in Tretayuga?

According to the Puranas, the average age of humans in Tretayuga is considered to be about 10,000 years. At that time the body was strong, disease free and long lived. For example, in many texts the age of King Dasharatha is stated to be 60,000 years. Lord Shri Ram ruled the earth for about 11,000 years. This presents a completely different picture from today’s human life, where even the age of a hundred years is considered an exception.

Did death happen even in that era?

Death happens in every era, but in Tretayuga its form was not like Kaliyuga. According to the scriptures, premature death (death at an early age) was very rare at that time. Deaths due to common diseases, epidemics or mental stress were negligible. Most of the people used to leave their body only after living their entire life.

euthanasia and disease free body

The concept of euthanasia was prevalent in the early period of Satyayuga and Tretayuga. This means that a person could choose the time to leave his body on completion of his life. The body was so healthy and balanced that serious diseases did not occur till old age. Death was not painful but was peaceful and conscious.

What were the main causes of death?

  • In Tretayuga, death occurred mainly due to three reasons.
  • Complete old age (when the purpose of life is fulfilled)
  • Dharma Yudh (to protect religion)
  • curse or divine providence

Like today, death due to minor illnesses, pollution or lifestyle diseases was considered very rare in that era.

Water Samadhi and Voluntary Demise

The death of Lord Ram and his brothers is not called an ordinary death. According to the scriptures, after the completion of the incarnation, Lord Rama took water samadhi in the Saryu river. This demise took place voluntarily and with full consciousness. This is considered completely different from today’s natural or accidental death.

Human age decreasing according to eras

It is clearly stated in the Puranas that as Dharma i.e. virtuous deeds decrease and sinful deeds increase, the age of man also decreases.

  • Satyayuga: 1,00,000 years
  • Tretayuga: 10,000 years
  • Dwaparyuga: 1,000 years
  • Kaliyuga: average 100 years

What is the difference if compared with Kaliyuga?

In today’s Kaliyuga, untimely death is common, diseases, stress, accidents and mental imbalance have increased, life has become short but complex. Whereas in the era of Lord Ram, life was long, balanced and purposeful, death was not considered a fear but a natural stage, people used to leave their bodies with dignity and peace. Therefore, in the era of Lord Ram, death was not as sudden, painful or frightening as in Kaliyuga. People used to leave their bodies peacefully after completing their long life, fulfilling their religion and duties. This is the reason why Tretayuga is still considered a symbol of ideal life and ideal death.
