After 54 years, the treasury of Shri Banke Bihari Temple of Mathura was opened on Dhanteras, but only debris and empty box were found! The servants raised questions, where did Thakurji’s goods go? Theft has happened twice, demand for investigation intensified.
Mathura: The mysterious Toshakhana of Thakur Shri Banke Bihari Temple, which was closed for 54 years, was finally opened on the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras, but what came out shocked everyone. There were expectations that a huge amount of gold, silver, diamonds and jewels would be found here, but only empty boxes, broken trunks and old utensils were found in the treasury. Now the big question has arisen, where has Thakurji’s treasure gone?
Empty boxes and old utensils found in treasury
The treasury was opened on Saturday in the presence of District Magistrate CP Singh and administrative officials. After breaking the seal, brass utensils, wooden paneled temples, old chests and empty jewelery boxes were found inside. The CA who came from Delhi prepared a list of every item. The surprising thing was that the treasury, which was once said to contain precious gems and gold jewellery, now contained only dust, debris and broken objects.

Treasury found empty, officials raised serious questions
Committee member and service member Dinesh Goswami said, “The treasury was opened, but the question remained. After all, where did the treasure go after so many years? If the boxes are empty then why are the trunks broken?” He has demanded a high-level inquiry into this entire matter and said that this issue will be raised prominently in the next committee meeting.
There have been incidents of theft twice
According to the services, there have been incidents of theft in the Toshkhana of the temple in the years 1926 and 1936. It was sealed on court orders in 1971. Now the question is whether the valuables were already taken out or went missing later? According to the elders, there was also a cellar in the temple, where the treasure was kept. It is said that the king of Gwalior had also gifted an ivory stick to Bihariji.
‘Aaradhya ki Maya’ became a topic of discussion on social media
After the opening of the treasury of Shri Banke Bihari Temple, a round of discussion started on social media. Someone wrote – “Where has the treasure gone?” So someone said sarcastically – “Aaradhya’s love, Toshkhana ate everything.” #BankeBihariTreasure kept trending throughout the day on Facebook and X. Some users shared old stories, while some accused the temple administration of not maintaining transparency.
Debate increased due to the statement of services
- Ashok Goswami said, “I had heard from the elders that there are valuable items in the treasury here. Now I am saddened to see the empty boxes.”
- Johnny Goswami said, “The committee should maintain transparency, what was the problem in showing it live?”
- Nitin Sanwariya says, “The public will not get any benefit from the treasury, now attention should be paid to the temple system.”
- Rajat Goswami raised the question, “Why were the pockets not checked before opening the treasury?”
- Neelam Goswami said, “The dignity of the temple has been violated, the orders of the Supreme Court have been ignored.”
What will be the next action?
The administration said that one room and two boxes of the treasury are still to be opened, which will be opened on Sunday. However, now people’s expectations have reduced. At present the treasury has been sealed again and the report has been submitted to higher officials. Opened on the day of Dhanteras, neither gold nor silver came out of this mysterious treasury, but countless questions were raised. Will this 54 year old mystery ever be solved or will the treasure of Shri Banke Bihari Temple always remain a mystery?
