MicahJo Barnett, a running back for William Jewell College, tragically passed away on Saturday following a medical emergency during the season opener against Fort Lewis College in Liberty, Missouri.
The game was subsequently suspended due to the incident.
Emergency Response
Paramedics were called to the field and transported Barnett to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead a few hours later. The college has not disclosed the cause of his death.
According to a spokesperson from William Jewell College, Barnett did not have any known health issues that would have prevented him from participating in the game. The spokesperson stated, “The College has no details as to the nature/cause.” No additional information has been provided by the institution or Barnett’s family.

As reported by The Athletic, emergency services arrived at approximately 12:20 PM CDT. Paramedics attempted resuscitation efforts before transporting him to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Dr. Dave Van Horn, President of William Jewell, shared that Barnett was a business major and a local from Liberty.

“Our partners have been reaching out to us and have given us great support during this time. A candlelight service will be held at eight o’clock this evening on our campus quad in memory of MicahJo,” Dr. Van Horn added.
Fort Lewis College’s Director of Athletics, Shawn Jakubowski, extended heartfelt condolences to the William Jewell community, stating, “Our hearts are with his family, friends, teammates, coaches, and everyone at William Jewell during this incredibly difficult time. Fort Lewis College counseling staff is reaching out to our football team to ensure our players and staff have the support they need.”
